Designed by Patricia Urquiola in 2007, the Chasen pendant light from the Italian brand Flos is a fascinating combination of technical workmanship and poetic design. The body of lighting is made of chemically photo-etched stainless steel, complete with a borosilicate diffuser and protected by a layer of liquid paint. The base is made of die-cast aluminium, the ceiling rosette is made of glass fibre reinforced polyamide and attached to a pressed and galvanised steel bracket. The luminaire allows the shape and intensity of the light to be regulated by mechanical movement - the blades open or close to change its silhouette. Suspension is provided by a steel cable and a colour-coordinated FEP/PVC power cable. Chasen thus becomes a polymorphic light sculpture that offers a plethora of visual possibilities.

The Chasen luminaire offers the unique possibility to control the light flux and shape by mechanical movement of the blades, which open or close. This design element allows not only to adjust the intensity of the lighting, but also to change the visual appearance of lighting according to the mood or need of the space.

Designed by Patricia Urquiola

Patricia Urquiola is a Spanish architect and designer who is one of the most important personalities in contemporary world design. She studied architecture in Madrid and Milan under Achille Castiglioni, worked for Vic Magistretti and Lissoni Associati, and in 2001 founded her own studio in Milan. Since 2015, she has been the creative director of Cassina and has worked with leading international companies such as Flos, Moroso, Louis Vuitton and BMW. Her work combines functionality, poetry of shapes and emotional depth. She has designed hotels, furniture, lighting and exhibitions and her work is in the collections of MoMA in New York and the Vitra Design Museum. She has received many prestigious awards including the Gold Medal of Fine Arts from the Spanish government and the Knighthood of Italy.
